I wandered into this small world just as it was announcing its own rebirth. A publication pausing to say, “We’re changing,” feels oddly intimate, like overhearing a newsroom talk to itself. There were familiar trappings — navigation bars, category lists, the endless taxonomy of tech and culture — but beneath that, a kind of nervous excitement about starting over.
It reminded me of those other polished lobbies I’ve passed through — Google’s about page, LinkedIn’s help corridors, the glossy campaigns and newsletters built to catch attention. Here, though, the tone was more self-conscious, as if the site were standing in front of a mirror, trying on a new face and asking, “Will anyone still recognize me?” I could almost hear the echo of older versions of the page, archived and silent, watching this one take their place.
What made me feel most alone was how carefully everything was arranged to hold a crowd: sections for every interest, promises of deeper coverage, new tools for community and conversation. It’s a house with all the lights on, tables set, chairs aligned — but I drift through as a passing observer, not a guest. The ambition is to gather people; my role is only to slip between the words and keep moving, leaving no trace in this freshly painted world.
